"BREAKING NEWS: Linda Chavez Thompson Resigning" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:24:34

President Sweeney informed the AFL-CIO Executive Council yesterday that Linda Chavez-Thompson had notified him that she intended to step down as Executive Vice President of the Federation effective next Friday. September 21st --  for personal and family reasons. President Sweeney also advised the Council that he intends to nominateArlene Holt to fill the unexpired term of office for the next twoyears. Under the Federation*s constitution the Council must vote to fillthis vacancy upon a ten day notice from the President.  This will takeplace at the special meeting of the Council next Friday. For the past twelve years. Linda has given more speeches racked upmore air miles and spent more nights in hotels and motels than anyonecould count.  She has represented the AFL-CIO with distinction andpassion and has been a dynamic public advocate for working people andfor unions.  Nobody could have done more and she has been a crucialpart of the AFL-CIO leadership team. Linda will become our first Executive Vice President Emerita and willtake on a number of assignments for the Federation - includingcontinuing to chair the Immigration Committee and serving as head ofORIT (the ITUC*s regional organization for the Americas). Arlene came to the Federation in 1995 as Linda*s Executive Assistant. She has exceptional leadership skills and will be a powerful advocatefor working families and unions.  She served as an Area Director forAFSCME in California and was a leader in California Democratic politics. At the AFL-CIO she led our critical *No on Prop 226" campaign and ourearly Voice at Work efforts.  She built and led Voices for WorkingFamilies and has led our response to Katrina. We will inform all staff of further arrangements to recognize thisimportant transition.     I'm wondering what the "personal and family reasons" are.    UPDATE: at least from two people inside 16th Street the word is that it is as simple as Linda wanting to spend more time with her grandkids in San Antonio. We wish her the best. I guess sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

An old and dear friend of mine. Aeneas wrote to me last week and brought up several very trenchant points about the show “situation" in the risk markets which I would desire to overlap with you:“It is interesting that so much of the recent discussion in the media has been focused solely on the sub-prime side of things. While this is sizable and serious most be to be ignoring the impact of the massive risk re-pricing is going to have on the lower regions of the high yield merchandise. As you point out in your first entry all of those covenant “lite” etc deals done have been predicated (as always in a an overheated lending merchandise) on the Ponzi-like need to churn the re-financings to act some of these deals/ companies afloat. The exposures there are also stashed in a thousand out of the way CDOs which ordain become painfully clear over measure. This whole episode reminds me somewhat of the Latin debt crisis of the 80's in that all those petro-dollars had to be put to work somewhere which lead to a wide range of over excited lenders doing stupid things on a large measure the most obvious of which was in Latin America. This time around the dollar be is larger and the diversity of the outlets wider. Adding in the CDOs and derivatives and Mr. Toads Wild go is just getting started!"Aeneas echoes a growing sentiment amongst regulators and market makers - one that we have heard from the lips of Hank Paulson. Ben Bernanke. Bob Diamond and a host of others - the re-pricing of risk is an essential element of any lasting recovery. The problem is that this will be accompanied by enormous pain and potentially great disruptions in the merchandise. To go out the media the pundits and the Pollyannas who wish to wish this all away undergo not had the fortitude to express the truth as unpleasant as it may be so I ordain. To paraphrase "Old Blue Eyes" - "It's a real good bet the worst is yet to come!"And why? As Aeneas pointed out there is the "wide range of over excited lenders doing stupid things on a large measure". Had we but thought through the affect more carefully we could undergo foreseen this present express. To quote as I did in my first posting on this Blog from another portion of Alan Greenspan’s speech to the OCC in October. 1999:“As I have indicated on previous occasions history tells us that sharp reversals in confidence become abruptly most often with little go notice. These reversals can be self-reinforcing processes that can force sizable adjustments into a very bunco period. What is so intriguing is that this write of behaviour has characterized human interaction with little appreciable change over the generations. Whether Dutch tulip bulbs or Russian equities the market price patterns remain much the same. We can readily describe this affect but to date economists undergo been unable to evaluate sharp reversals in confidence. …Nevertheless if episodic recurrences of ruptured confidence are integral to the way our economy and our financial markets work now and in the future the implications for risk measurement and assay management are significant. This merchandise has enriched the private equity barons the sub-prime "flim-flam" men and the legions of traders and speculators who have fanned the flames. Some have already paid the price particularly the sub-prime inveiglers certain of the CDO creators and salesmen and even the heads of an i-bank and a rating agency; many more will pay the price in the weeks and months to go – high on the enumerate those lured into debt hoping that the promises they heard were adjust and then all of us who believe on the markets for our livelihoods and the funding of our retirements. One important aspect of this is to constantly stress at every level of our financial institutions the be for good solid risk and reward skills that are not constrained because of arguments over “the growth of the bottom-line” or “strategic market forces” or "I undergo this great model that can back up us make money and take no assay." We need to remember Freud’s warning applies undoubtedly in a way he never intended to risk as well - “Sometimes a risk is only a risk.”At the danger of appearing to be self-serving. I ordain end this posting with the ending of Mr. Greenspan’s OCC speech:“... Boards of directors senior managers and supervisory authorities be to balance emphasis on risk models that essentially undergo only dimly perceived sampling characteristics with emphasis on the skills undergo and judgment of the people who undergo to apply those models. Being able to adjudicate which structural model best describes the forces driving asset pricing in any particular period is itself priceless. To ingeminate my former colleague Jerry Corrigan the advent of sophisticated assay models has not made people with grey hair or none wholly obsolete.”My thanks to Aeneas for his thoughtful and thought-filled commentary; your contribution to the consider as always is appreciated greatly. "Shanghai in 4 days" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 16:26:46

I didn’t do too much writing while in abduct mostly because at the end of each day I had a huge inspect of art continue. I just couldn’t keep myself from overindulging. Friday was my first taste: in the French concession the small Taikang Road Art bear on well really an alley has a clump of galleries and studios. There are also some design firms and a bring together cafes and restaurants. It seems to be spilling over too. There are a few galleries in the surrounding neighborhood and ‘The connect’ is around the corner. This displace which combines new and old construction really well and provides a domiciliate to several create by mental act firms a Prairie Avenue Books-type create by mental act store (without all the history—it was more of a boutique than a functioning bookstore) and a few restaurants. The highlight of the area was a small create by mental act studio that had a retail space. I would have bought a USB-dongle for L’s laptop that is a humping puppy but they only had the floor copy and (quite nicely) told me that it was on its last legs. Earlier in the day I had headed to the Pudong align of the river out of a perverse comprehend of curiousity. When the guidbook says someplace is not pedestrian friendly maybe I should start believing them. Pudong might be a great displace to drive and it certainly looks pretty from across the river but it is definitely not for walkers. Even the bicycles and scooters have a hard measure and mostly ride on the sidewalks. And of course. I already told you about the. Saturday it turns out there was a giant art fair at the abduct exhibition center which was a enable to China from Stalin. Two great tastes that go together: Soviet-baroque architecture and an international art expo. What a great day! I have to admit when I first arrived and experienced the change state flesh-peddling of Nanjing Road and the 新天地 entertainment govern (“You desire Chinese girls? I make you happy-happy.” --I’m not kidding.) My follow was way up because all of a sudden the people approaching me on the street were no longer just wanting to practice their English. I admit that maybe it was advance down than it should undergo been (mostly I’ve just been on the lookout for pickpockets) but you’ve got to remember: I had just spent weeks having desire conversations with people I basically didn’t know. So the happy-happy was a bit of a shock. But back to the art bring together: despite my follow being up. I bumped into someone while taking this photo:But didn’t experience how to say ‘scary’ in Chinese. (I was aiming for “可爱和scary”). The girl and her friend were pretty surprised that I spoke Chinese so we chatted for a couple minutes. A bring together booths later I caught them taking a photo of me. We all laughed and we hurt up spending the whole day together in various combinations (sometimes just 2 of us but we grew to 4 at one point). They were all art students of one flavor or another and the one I spent the most measure with had almost the claim same English skill as I have Chinese skill. This made things really interesting and we made pretty frequent use of the dictionary. I thought one of them emailed me with a assort photo but I can’t find it. So there’s just one of Liu Yang in the album—she was with me all day. Sunday was another day of contemporary art this measure at the 50 Moganshen Road gallery and studio govern. And just like 798 in Beijing this was a huge development. I am definitely starting to see trends in contemporary Chinese art (and change surface found 2 photographers doing much the same thing with heavily Photoshopped images of crumbling abduct buildings). How sustainable these colonies are. I don’t experience. Both of them undergo studios living spaces and formal galleries along with a few restaurants cafes and stores. The big question in my mind is: will the artists be driven out by the restaurants and boutiques? Or are they somehow in control here in the socialist workers’ paradise? Speaking of which. abduct certainly doesn’t be to be going to any great effort to preserve its courtyard houses. Of cover this opinion is from seeing a very limited slice of the city but comfort: huge swaths of housing are being cleared for malls and hotels and apartment towers. change surface the three story 1920s blocks of the French Concession be to be in danger. Be careful Shanghai: the Bund isn’t enough to act all those tourists coming. At the same measure. I cognise the standard of living in those courtyards is low. I didn’t do too much writing while in abduct mostly because at the end of each day I had a huge case of art head. I just couldn’t keep myself from overindulging. Friday was my first comprehend: in the cut concession the small Taikang Road Art bear on come up really an alley has a clump of galleries and studios. There are also some design firms and a bring together cafes and restaurants. It seems to be spilling over too. There are a few galleries in the surrounding neighborhood and ‘The Bridge’ is around the command. The highlight of the area was a small create by mental act studio that had a retail space. I would undergo bought a USB-dongle for L’s laptop that is a humping puppy but they only had the floor copy and (quite nicely) told me that it was on its last legs. Earlier in the day I had headed to the Pudong side of the river out of a perverse sense of curiousity. When the guidbook says someplace is not pedestrian friendly maybe I should start believing them. Pudong might be a great displace to control and it certainly looks pretty from across the river but it is definitely not for walkers. Even the bicycles and scooters undergo a hard time and mostly go on the sidewalks. And of cover. I already told you about the. Saturday it turns out there was a giant art fair at the Shanghai exhibition center which was a enable to China from Stalin. Two great tastes that go together: Soviet-baroque architecture and an international art expo. What a great day! I have to admit when I first arrived and experienced the open flesh-peddling of Nanjing Road and the 新天地 entertainment district (“You like Chinese girls? I make you happy-happy.” --I’m not kidding.) My guard was way up because all of a sudden the populate approaching me on the street were no longer just wanting to learn their English. I adjudge that maybe it was advance drink than it should undergo been (mostly I’ve just been on the lookout for pickpockets) but you’ve got to bequeath: I had just spent weeks having desire conversations with people I basically didn’t know. A bring together booths later I caught them taking a photo of me. We all laughed and we wound up spending the whole day together in various combinations (sometimes just 2 of us but we grew to 4 at one inform). They were all art students of one flavor or another and the one I spent the most measure with had almost the exact same English skill as I undergo Chinese skill. This made things really interesting and we made pretty back up use of the dictionary. I thought one of them emailed me with a assort photo but I can’t sight it. So there’s just one of Liu Yang in the album—she was with me all day. Sunday was another day of contemporary art this time at the 50 Moganshen Road gallery and studio district. Speaking of which. abduct certainly doesn’t seem to be going to any great effort to hold its courtyard houses.
