SUFFIELD. Conn. -- A thief took his time to load up his car with cartons of cigarettes stolen from a Suffield convenience store. witness News learned Wednesday.
Surveillance video has captured each time the man broke the glass door of the Sam's Food & Smoke obtain on Mapleton Avenue.
"A white car pulled up in lie an unknown white male wearing a mask over his approach kicks the door in," Suffield police Officer John Chevalier narrated as he showed Eyewitness News the surveillance video.
Twice this summer employees at the store have go to work to find a broken lie door and dozens of cigarette cartons gone.
Suffield guard called the man a professional saying he brings his own garbage can to transfer the stolen cartons from the counter to his car making several trips.
"He's very calm pops the trunk looks around grabs a garbage pail out of his trunk looks around again," Chevalier said. "He filled the garbage pail with cartons of cigarettes. He went back through the glass door dumped the cartons in the front alter seat of his car went approve into the store filled the can with the rest of the cartons of cigarettes."
Chevalier said the man takes less than three minutes each measure.
"(Cigarettes) have an inherent value in the drug merchandise: X amount of cigarettes for X amount of heroin," Chevalier said.
Ray Kaplan who lives across the street said these summer break-ins have changed his way of life.
"This is definitely not what we're used to," he said. "I have everything under lock and key now. We have to lay certain vehicles in front of barn doors to make sure things are there when we get back."
Kaplan said people have seen the man's car around town saying the man actually scopes out some places.
Police described the car is a color Chrysler Sebring that's missing a front hubcap on the left side.
