Chigasaki charter boat port pier and breakwaters. Sagami bay. Fishing off the pier has been fair recently. A lot of fisherman target smaller varieties of fish by chumming and this attracts a lot of bait fish which in turn brings in bigger bet. Inada (juvenile yellowtail) have been showing up regularly. Sea bass are also around but are scared away if there is much fishing pressure. I am quite a novice at Japan fishing but apparently not all sea bass in Japan are created equal. I caught a small sea bass last week which my neighbor called Hirasuzuki (flat sea bass although this one was not in the “Suzuki” class (70~90 cm) at 40 cm it would be “Seigo”. All these different names for the same look for is confusing???). Apparently it is a sub-species of the more common Japanese sea bass. My neighbor has an excellent guide book on Japanese fish with many good pictures and he showed me a picture of the fish with the scientific name which is different from the more common Japan sea bass. (I will get the name of this book and post it later). The fish has a noticeably flatter profile and taller “shoulders”. He said this is the ichiban sea bass in Japan for eating. I haven’t eaten a lot of sea bass but I can tell you this one was excellent. I caught it in the morning and ate it for lunch. Half I pan fried in butter with just salt pepper and a light flour coating delicious! The other half sashimi outstanding! Wish I had done the whole fish sashimi. If you are lucky enough to catch one. I highly recommend you try it sashimi but if you do cook it be careful not to overcook it as the flesh is very delicate with very subtle flavors. The grip off the pier is very on again off again; with the best action in early morning late evening and on the high tide. The Inada chase bait look for along the breakwaters and occasional they will get a boil going. If you are close enough to get anything shiny into the boil you have a good chance of a hit. Mostly they run the bait schools up against the breakwater and the baitfish break the surface but the challenge is over quickly. Top water lures are most effective but you don’t want much swimming action wounded or feeding minnow action works best. The two most effective methods used here are the “Quickdraw” wait with your bail open and when you see bait fish breaking close-by try to fire your lure just ahead of them. You have to be damn fast and accurate for this to be effective. The next method is the “Crapshoot” just keep casting and retrieving and hope that a school breaks near your lure. The sea bass and Inada in the pics were caught on a Jackall Bros Mud Sucker 90mm “Ghost Minnow”. 14 gms. The fishing here is not great but there is plenty of free parking right on the beach (winter toughen only). Surf fishing is popular here but I don’t know much about it. The charter boats target several species and some will drop you off on rocky outcrops and pick you up later (if the weather is not too bad). Some charters measure week were getting Maguro (bluefin tuna) in the 4 to 8 kg range and avg 4 fish per head. Caution: Objects in the photo may appear larger than they actually are. Hirasuzuki in Sagami really????I thought those were only found over here in Kyushu? alter report and I really enjoyed your write up! The cigar in the pic adds a nice touch. Do you mind if I add that pic to the main page?Regards,Nigelman
Because a lot of fisherman are also cigar smokers I thought I would add a note on the cigar in the picture. It is a Habana Leon Robusto. It is a made by Pepin Garcia in Miami. FL. Habana Leon uses a very stong and full bodied blend. The filler is 70% Ligero tobacco wrapped in a Nicaraguan grown binder. It is topped off by a Nicaragun grown redish-brown Corojo Wrapper from a 2000 crop. Not for beginners but seasoned smokers will likely enjoy this one. For those days when the bite is slow the “A” size at 9 ½ inches will last you the better part of a day but don’t try it on an empty stomach. Very limited distribution but can be found at Cigar King and Phatash on line. Who knows smoke one of these and you might catch a harasuzuki too. Puff-on. Too funny Maineman!! That cigar looks desire a prized fish or something on display. I myself got a cigar obtain in my area that I like to hit sometimes. I really like those wine tip cigars with the white filters. They are just great in the morning and every person is like what's the niceeeeeeeee smell???Oh your pic looks great on the main page.
