"Hitachino red rice ale review." posted by ~Ray

I was at my local super market and felt like picking up some of the rare and hard to fine ales. I ran into this one call Hitachino red rice ale what struck me and was the bottles presentation it had a little owl on it. So on impulse I grabbed one. Now this bear is like nothing I have ever had before it is quite the rare specimen since red rice is pretty rare and only cultured in Japan. When puring it is a pink grapefruit color with a super head that does not subside for a few minutes. The flavor has some fruit qualities somewhat like the pink grapefruit pineapple and dragon fruit I know it is weired but this ale is quite nice and also has some nice sediment and also I noticed that while it is sweet with some tartness it is also salty at the same time. I would no drink this beer all the time but is nice to have around when you want something interesting. "Paramus garage sale." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-25 01:27:27

We got an early start yesterday and drove down to Paramus to pick up our from the Container Store. We got there within 10 minutes of the store opening which was wise — if you get there in the middle of the day on the weekend the wait time for all things Elfa can be as much as 2 hours! As it was we were in and out in 15 minutes. After the obligatory side trip (I don’t think it’s possible to go to Paramus and not go there even if you don’t need anything — of course. 5 steps into the Marketplace you find a dozen things you suddenly need after all which is why I have about 900 mugs in my kitchen) we did a quick run followed by the usual gas fillup (gas is a bit cheaper in NJ than NY). As we were leaving the gas station we saw a sign for a garage sale off of the main road. We followed the arrows through a Paramus suburb (which was nicer than I’d have thought it would be mostly early-1900’s kit homes) and found the sale. It was the kind of garage sale I remember there being 10-15 years ago before everyone sold all of their good old stuff on eBay. I found an apron made of really lovely fabric that I’ll most likely salvage for another use (bag? pillows? wee curtain?) a pretty white enamelware pouring cup a resuable Old Dutch shaker (never used product literature from 1948 tucked inside) that I’ll use for baking soda for cleaning a White Owl cigar box and a great old storage trunk made out of old fruit crates with a beadboard lid. All this for $20! I love garage sales. (Another photo October 1st. 2007 6:02 am

"Highway" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 19:38:40

Today we headed out to Dinbren again a week after my measure skin trashing session with “Highway”. Well it marks the end of the first two weeks of our intensive winter running and climbing training plan and I feel like a different climber again! Only two weeks of training on my come in and the 8a felt like a path! I really wanted to redpoint it today so after two laps on the crag 6b warm up I abbed down the despatch cleaning the holds and placing the quickdraws – the sharp nature of the crux monos means that I usually only get 3 good burns on this route so I didn’t want to waste any time (or climb). The temps were ameliorate sunshine dry rock and a nice blow. Someone must have been working the despatch lately and there were a few massive draw lines indicating someone’s choice of footholds… They weren’t much use to me and looked gank so I brushed them off aswell on my abb down before starting. While I was abbing an impressively large owl did a fly by of the entire crag. A create and son aggroup on a trad despatch further down alerted me to it first with shouts of “ Oh WOW!” and I turned around just in time to get an awesome aerial view of it’s bright golden plumage gliding by. Caroline was fairly chuffed with her close up too; apparently it practically flew past her face! As a align say the Clwydian crags are generally good for wildlife so far we’ve regularly seen Foxes hawks falcons. Owl’s. Rabbits mice and even a Poll cat or something up at worlds end (desire a giant squirrel with a massive cigar shaped tail with a black ring on it). Anyway. I pull the capture down and tie in… the despatch begins with a boulder problem involving a shallow mono and a slopey matchbox grip that has to be deadpointed from to a sharp two-finger pocket that you have to surprise as an sell at beat be. From there a few non-descript moves lead to a good hold and a be before a long crux grade out under and through a blank-looking bulge. Left fold high alter gaston left to negociate thumb-catch pay up left again out to wide beefy pinch right toehook in the good direct allows me to channel the gaston and catch a high undercut below the crux bulge without swinging off. Then the scary clip from way above the measure bolt. Now the strange bit previously I had been sketching by this stage due to the pump and nerves but this measure I’m solid enough to relax and chalk up my left before reaching over the bulge to the slopey two finger remove… normally this feels desperate and I undergo to snatch out to the right transfer mono sidepull but today I can actually lock-off and draw my right hand (I actually thought to myself “Why are you chalking up for a feckin mono?”) and then wipe the excess chalk off on my trousers before holding the mono. Next I’m adjusting my feet ready for the deadpoint to the Killer mono with the flapper-ripping tooth. From here on things get a bit Vocal as I know I’m fresh and I really want to stick this sequence. I arrive high to the mono and it feels good as I stack my ride and index finger onto my middle (just desire I practiced on the come in during the week) and go up my feet. The strike to the sloper happens perfectly and I’m on the bulge and further than I’ve ever been on this route. The footholds are rubbish at this point. Basically I’m standing on a quarter of your little fingernail with my right and a rough patch of vertical rock with my left. The handholds are slopers. The higher you stand up the more likely your feet are to skid off and theres a move to clip infront of my approach but I move let go of either transfer! I hop my left up high and have one of those on-off moments where I’m a gnats left testie from peeling off backwards. I’m on rest up to the undercut above and the final easy bulge after skipping the last displace. Clipping the lower off I’m shocked. 2 weeks of come in bring home the bacon and the despatch entangle desire a path compared to how it felt before our move to Ireland. After stripping the draws I was at a loss as to what to do next… I was all set for a beat days contend and I sent it in one! We kept busy – no shortage of bolts to clipMy second 8a … I'm Irish. I relocated to North Wales over two years ago after i graduated from DCU with an Engineering Degree. I spent years working as a climbing instructor and routesetter before trying a day job as an test and development design in an advanced optics affiliate... It didn't really fit me although i did apply the work from measure to time.. so now I'm training to be a Maths teacher. I am happiest when I'm outside at a height - climbing something center or running up a mountain. Keep smiling!
