"President Carothers hands deans sample letters of resignation" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:23:16 |
11/15/07 - University of Rhode Island President Robert L. Carothers handed some academic deans sample letters of resignation about a week ago. Provost Beverly Swan confirmed yesterday. Yesterday. Carothers confirmed he had handed some deans letters but refused to discuss their contents. "These discussions within management are for the management people not the press," Carothers said before a "topping out" ceremony for the new Center for Biotechnology and Life Sciences. Carothers who repeatedly said he did not want to discuss the topic said the deans were not leaving."They all have my full confidence," he said adding later. "They're not going to resign."But Carothers declined to explicitly say if he was putting pressure on deans to resign and confirmed he had met with the deans to discuss the many "challenges" the university faces."We talked about how challenging it is to face all of these issues right now," Carothers said. The university is in the midst of a re-accreditation review done every 10 years by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. At the same time the university - led by Carothers - is pushing for increasingly larger freshman class sizes which in turn has put pressure on some faculty to teach larger classes. Some deans and chairs have grumbled that Carothers is placing too much emphasis on rapid expansion in the sciences and ignoring other aspects of the university. A group of faculty senators from the library called on Faculty Senate to explore the issue during its meeting scheduled for today."Recent events seem to indicate that deans on campus feel powerless that they don't have input with the administration regarding decisions about delivering the curriculum and about budgetary matters," the senators wrote to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee earlier this month. "Recent events also suggest that any protest by the deans on these matters will not be tolerated by the administration."

"'The Hills' Effect: How LC changed my life" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-25 01:25:14 |
11/15/07 - First and foremost. I'm not an avid fan viewer or religious follower of "The Hills," an MTV reality show following the life of Lauren "LC" Conrad former resident of Laguna Beach. This is something that I randomly know. To get to the point. LC changed my life and I don't know if it was for better or worse but all I know is that this California girl next door worked her magic. So I was working on a take- home test that was due on Tuesday and the TV had been on MTV all day because there's usually something good on eventually except when there's an all day marathon of "America's Next Top Model." As I was figuring out how Derber is somehow in relation to Nace and those who make up the top 10 percent of the wealth. I hear the lyrics "Feel the rain on your skin" and look up to see a panorama of the Hollywood Hills. This was not good. I don't usually watch "The Hills," nor did I have the desire to watch it that night but I was so enthralled with my bring home the bacon that I just left it on thinking that I could work through this agonizing pain. I'll adjudge that I've watched "Laguna land" a few times on a rainy day but never "The Hills." I don't get how these people are famous for living out their daily lives. These kids come from privileged families so I don't see why they need the fame. On a side note how in the hell did Talon get the lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls to be his girl? OK so I'm semi-watching the show while doing my test. The show got my full attention when Heidi and LC meet for the first time at some event. LC desire the strong woman that she is tells Heidi that she needs to apologize for something Spencer did. (I take it Spencer is the guy that came between these two former friends.)This was when LC impacted me. This former suburbanite wasn't taking any crap from Heidi unless she got her apology. Heidi just walked away. I finished my test during the commercial end - I really just wanted to see what LC was going to do next - and was anxious to see what was about to go down. Heidi instant messages LC and they go back and forth until they've reached the conclusion that both parties are going to meet at LC's place. Heidi comes over brings flowers and then s*** hits the fan. LC's yelling. Heidi acts clueless and then LC says. "I forgive you but I want to forget you," and then Heidi walks out. I was completely blown away and proud of what LC had done. A girl looked up to by millions. LC had taken one of the most cliché phases and turned it into a weapon of mass destruction. Now that you undergo been anointed a patron saint of strong wiliness. I praise you. LC for not dealing with a dumbfounded Heidi and all the drama that she entails. One day I dream of being such a strong woman - just like you - and maybe in the long run dating someone just like you. I just hope you don't say such malicious and hurtful words to me or else you'll get the kick.

"Freshmen live and learn in communities" posted by ~Ray

11/16/07 - Every year incoming freshmen sit in hot orientation rooms at the University of Rhode Island to pick classes for their first semester of college and choose their learning communities."When I first [learned about learning communities]. I thought it was dumb because they pick the classes for you and stuck you with the same people every day," freshman Stephanie Blakely said. Many students echoed the same initial concerns. A learning community is made up of a series of courses corresponding to a certain major with about 20 seats in each group. Incoming freshmen can decide their learning community based on which community has the most classes that appeal to them and their major."After being in a learning community. I really like them now," Blakely said. "You alter friends and have people to study with and everyone is going through the same things as you."Jayne Richmond dean of University College said that look support is an essential part of learning communities. "When we create their classes and even their living arrangements as learning communities students are more likely to get to know each other better create study groups and try new challenges," she said. One course that all learning communities undergo in common is URI 101. The goal of URI 101 is to alter students familiar with the campus and its resources. All incoming freshmen are required to take the one-credit cover in their fall semester of their first year. Each URI 101 class must also complete a community function project as move of the Feinstein Enriching America Program. The project is aimed at giving back to the community while bringing students closer together."It was useful and the projects desire diversity week and the community service project affiliated us with the campus," freshman James Thayer said. "It makes us feel more comfortable with the campus and accept."More than 600 colleges and universities were surveyed for the 2007 National Survey of Student Engagement and URI excelled in the categories of learning communities community service internships and practicum and foreign language courses. In the coming years. URI will continue to have learning communities for incoming freshmen. University College plans on offering more living communities in residence halls for learning communities such as a nursing living and learning community in fall 2008. The university already offers learning communities for students in health sciences. Honors and the College of Environmental and Life Sciences students.

"Bolivar Tubos No 1 May 05" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 11:20:57 |
Bolivar Tubos No 1 May 05The question was asked fellow FOH member. Tim as to whether the Bolivar No 1 Tubos was the same blend as the discontinued and much loved Bolivar Corona. To be honest I did not know so I did the only thing I could and went drink to the humidor to be at my boxes of Bolivar No 1 Tubos and select one to review. The first thing I noticed when opening up a few boxes and uncapping the Tubos within was the sheer variability of wrapper shades and construction quality. Within any given box was a sheer kaleidescope of wrappers from almost oscuro to colorado to olive. I selected a good looking example as it was Friday afternoon and I wanted a good cigar to finish the working week.
Great looking dark and oily wrapper with a sweet dank earthy aroma at cold. Clipped the cap and found a good slightly resistant draw and sweet earth on the palate. Fired up the foot and watched the ultra slow combustion dark brooding menacing. The opening draws were medium beat bodied. The opening flavours hide and flog with some charred caramelized figs. Good white pepper hit through the nose enticing dark tobacco aroma. The cigar is settling drink into medium bodied and the fig sweetness is dissipating to be replaced by an old leather note with increasing levels of woody cedar. There is an increasing real forest floor nature to this cigar wet wood mushrooms earth wet flog.
The opening third to this cigar was outstanding but setting such a precipice left it open to a go in the back up third. The brooding plant floor notes continued... very distinct to the inform you expected an earth worm to pop out.. but I was missing the earlier sweet notes which added a dimension which is now missing. Still excellent comfort medium bodied and chewy with a thick viscous mouthfeel. This cigar is cruising like the silhouette of a cheat through dark water. Slow purposefull and in hold back.
There was no study dress in the Bolivar Tubos No 1 after the opening third. In many ways it is a classic Bolivar with earth flog and spice. The Tubos No 1 may or may not be the same blend as the Bolivar Corona. I feel that time spent in the furnish does alter the flavour characteristics of a cigar. The sheer variablitity of the boxes of Bolivar Tubos No 1 would say to me that I could consume half a dozen and I would get a wide array of smoking experiences (wrapper and construction (over /underfilling) variations). This was a very good cigar. 89/100 5/6 smokerings.
