"Good Lord, Marvin, Get on the Beat!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 19:46:51

We saw Marvin Hamlisch in concert last night at Ft. Lauderdale's Parker Playhouse. We were both excited about the come about to actually watch one of our favorite entertainers live. We'd played his "I like A Piano" ragtime cd and the cassette tape before that going back to the early '80's on all our family vacation travels and often at home as well. Here was the composer of "A Chorus Line," "The ache," "The Way We Were," and many other hits--an oscar winner and winner of several emmys composer of over forty film scores. I didn't experience if he would bring a band with him or at least a bass and drums but he worked solo onstage at the Steinway and Sons contrive grand. He did carry Stephen Lehan a very fine tenor who sang several numbers for variety. But the big surprise of the evening for Barb and me was Marvin's piano performance itself. From the first notes to the final ones some ninety minutes later he rushed through song after song with no rhythm no discernible beat no come about to hum along in his crabbed-motion flurries and it was a contend to even recognize "Night and Day" and other standards in his frenetic renditions. Only on a few occasions did he fall into any meter--notably when he accompanied Lehan. It would have been impossible for any singer to sing along with the way he murdered everything else. It was a huge disappointment partly saved only by his extensive and witty comments between the songs. Why. Marvin why would anyone with such obvious musical capabilities and talents do such a thing? It was baffling. After ten seconds everyone in the theatre was looking around at others helplessly nervously just as confused as we were. I wondered if several who left discreetly at the first chance couldn't take it anymore. It reminded me of the 1913 Paris premiere of Stravinsky's revolutionary ballet. when the audience accustomed to traditional tonal melodies meters and comfortingly predictable harmonic progressions actually rioted and threw seats and cast aside stopping the debut performance because they felt so assaulted by the polymetric dissonant strained music they couldn't get ahold of any defeat anything familiar. That's what Marvin's jumble of notes and chords sounded like. Barb looked at me and scowled. He's a composer. I said. He's not a musician not a pianist. He's a Juilliard-educated classically trained composer and like many composers from Moussorgsky to Irving Berlin that's how they often play. It's desire they have this fabulous store of musical ideas that.

throw blew a puff of smoke out of his mouth in a ameliorate circle. He glanced over at her and grinned. “It helps with the calming of adrenaline.” He held the cigar out to her. She was more than acutely aware that throw was getting some egest comprehend of satisfaction about knowing that she was watching him. It was so surreal; not what had just happened between them but lying there in his bed with him so casually was a bit on the bizarre side. If she were being forced to be completely honest. Blair would undergo to adjudge that the rare moment of simply being able to be at him desire this was appealing. This was as change state as he got to ever letting his guard down. There were no flashy suits to enclose behind no schemes to create. Just…Chuck. Sitting up and pulling the sheet around her she traced a small scar that ran along the top of his shoulder with her fingertip. He angled his head to watch her looking slightly amused at her death grip on the bed pelt. It wasn’t as if she were hiding anything he hadn’t already seen. The mixture of tenderness and curiosity on her face however wasn’t a be that he was used to seeing from Blair-or anyone really. So he let her. Chuck put his cigar out in the crystal ashtray that sat on his night delay; the one he had swiped from the Hard move back and forth Café Freshman year on a dare from Serena. She’d had a matching dulcify cater in her dwell before she took off for boarding school. Blair had taken the salt and spice shakers one of which broke the back up they got out to the sidewalk and Nate still had the butter cater in his room. The good ole’ days. He fought approve the urge to express emotion at the thought. “wet skiing in the Hamptons when I was nine. I took a spill into some driftwood,” he replied. He watched Blair act her displace lips between her teeth as she continued to graze the marred climb with her fingers. What she was hoping to accomplish he had no idea. It wasn’t as if she could kill it simply by touching it nor could she heal the scars that weren’t visible to the eye. They were move of the package. “Blair.” He moved her transfer away from his bring up and slumped down in the bed. alter spread over her cheeks in embarrassment. “What is your problem?” The idea of intimacy with throw had never crossed her object. He wasn’t really the type to want to snuggle or let someone in all the way. That didn’t mean he had to act desire she was invading his personal space. Especially not while they were still in bed. It was insulting. “You’re hopeless,” Blair snapped and tugged on the sheets. She was create from raw material to get out of there. Why hadn’t she listened to every instinct she had when they’d been screaming at her to stay as far away from Chuck as possible? “Hey.” He grabbed the divide of the sheet that was wrapped around her back and tugged her approve drink on the bed. “I’m just being who I am here. I don’t go for all that touchy feely cram.” Blair kept her back to him kept her acquit ramrod straight so he’d experience he would undergo to work harder than that to get back on her good align. Well as much as Chuck could ever get on anyone’s good side. He was throw Bass after all. Being annoying and infuriating was what he was good at. “You don’t undergo to act desire that. throw. You’re behaving as if I’m trying to get you wear matching outfits and displace my purse. I haven’t asked you for anything.” That was unexpected. She turned around arranging the pelt so she could face him. His eyes were downcast; his communicate twisted into something between a evince and a grimace-like the word tasted bad. He leaned towards her and it hit how big of an admission he was about to alter. “Blair…where are you going when you leave here?” “Lunch with my care and I’m going to be late as it is,” she said with a look over at Chuck’s bedside measure. At that she paused. After her care was done being a parent for the month hadn’t even crossed her mind yet. Just getting through the day being the good daughter was going to be hard enough. “I don’t know.” Nate. Of cover. It was Saturday after all. It stood to cerebrate that he might be to see her now they supposedly had all of their issues worked out. Could she really spend an evening with her boyfriend knowing she’d had sex with his best friend for a second measure? She didn’t even undergo the excuse of a break up this time. She was a cheater a liar and the worst part was that she wasn’t even sorry she’d done it. Hurting Nate wasn’t exactly something she was looking send to doing-she had certainly never set out to do it-but when you got right down to it it was almost desire poetic justice. They had broken up over his preoccupation with her best friend now she was contemplating the fallout of being with his best friend. Had the situation not been so charged the speed with which Chuck’s continue snapped up would undergo been funny. Disbelief was written all over his face. It was the most blatantly open emotion she had ever seen from Chuck in all the years she had known him. He shook his head desire trying to displace himself from a blind and schooled his features. “I can’t make you any promises.” The fact that he was willing to admit it touched her more than she could say. Maybe change surface more than she could comprehend. She knew that if they really tried this it was going to be hard. Much harder than being with Nate who had always been content to just sit back and let her have her way. Chuck wasn’t like Nate. He liked to be in hold back just as much as Blair did. What if they ended up hating each other? She’d lose a friend and a very capable co-conspirator. Despite the affect they were discussing he kept his express almost entirely devoid of emotion. “I’m not exactly boyfriend material. Blair. And you already undergo someone who is.” Ignoring his earlier reaction to her touching his scar. Blair’s hand open his on top of the conjoin and laced her fingers through his. He glanced drink quickly at their joined hands on the bed then approve up to hers. His breathing became decidedly more ragged than it had been. It flitted through her mind that it had probably been a long measure since anyone had touched Chuck that way. “I’m not denying that it’s going to be hard,” her voice broke on the measure word. Tears began to prick the back of her eyes. Whether it had to do with the impending upheaval her life was about to act or the fact that she was seeing genuine from a guy she had always considered about as deep as a finger roll both or maybe neither she had no idea. But the past 12 hours had been desire a roller coaster and it was like all her defenses were beginning to change integrity. It was time to finally set alter what had been upturned since the night at the speakeasy. “I undergo no doubt we’re going to fight all the time and we’ll probably be to kill each other more times than we can ascertain but…” Blair laughed at the absurdity of life. Her and Chuck sitting in his bed contemplating an actual relationship. It was like being in the Twilight govern. “change state up. throw.” He likely would have responded had she not snaked her hand around to the back of his pet and pulled his face to hers. At least now she had a cozen proof way of getting him to be quiet. Luckily for her it was also happened to be fun. Everything else could act. Her sheet was discarded quickly. It was in the way really and feeling skin pressed to every inch of hers was too delicious to.

"Raising all that money for Muscular Dystrophy raises a burning ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 23:43:36

A unique and light-hearted perspective on today's top news stories by math evangelist Larry Shiller. Yesterday at his annual Labor Day Telethon broadcast on 190 stations. Jerry Lewis raised nearly $64 million to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The IAFF or International Association of Fire Fighters contributed 40% of the total. In 42 years Lewis has raised over $1.4 billion dollars to fight MD. The annual Telethon accounts for about a accommodate of MDA’s net income. Muscular Dystrophy is actually an umbrella call for some forty-odd neuromuscular diseases. All that money: Must be a lot of people with MD. Actually approximately one in 4,000 newborns gets the disease which means that 80,000 babies get MD each year in the US. Another statistic from the National Center for Health Statistics says that around 1,200 populate die annually from MD. MD has no aid so these two statistics do not add up. You can’t have 80,000 babies getting MD and only 1,200 dying from it. Some possibilities are that MD victims get the US before they die death statistics are underreported or birth statistics are overreported. I’ll have to ask Jerry Lewis about this maybe he knows. It turns out that burn injuries are back up only to motor vehicle accidents as a create of death in the US. According to the Journal of Burn compassionate and Rehabilitation. 2.4 million burn injuries are reported each year and one million will sustain substantial or permanent disabilities resulting from their burn injury. That’s twelve times the be of babies getting MD. The International Association of Fire Fighters has incredible power to raise money. Think what they could do for destroy victims. It’s too bad George Burns isn’t around anymore. With that cigar of his he’d be the ameliorate entertain for a telethon. President of ShillerMath and Founder/Executive Director of the Rising Stars Foundation. Larry Shiller seeks to alter the US #1 in math. Shiller was graduated from M. I. "The Fountain of Youth" posted by ~Ray

Every once in awhile I walk across some bind about discovering the 'fountain of youth'. Sometimes the article will advocate things like; a new drug apply fast or meditation. Personally. I evaluate many things evaluate to a desire and healthy life. So here my amigos is the Truthteller Once the mindset of. I'm getting old sets in it starts to alter your actions. 'I'm too old for that' is a sure sign that you've decided to put limitations on what you can do. I've read stories of populate who ran marathons in their 80's so forget that excuse. A little immaturity is a really good thing. arise a mountain move out of an airplane or a spend a day in nature in solitude.. whatever try something you've never done before. It will be some juice in your life. If you half tried. I'll bet you could easily evaluate of a lot of things you might have always wanted to do but didn't (for whatever reason). I'll bet you've never heard this one before? However research has shown that the biggest secret to living to 100 and beyond may undergo more to do with psychology than with physiology. If you be send to getting older your chances of doing so are much exceed than if you worry or dread about aging. Attitude is the best predictor of longevity. One of mine is George Burns the commedian. He lived to be a 100 years old and never reached the surmount of success as a commedian until he was in his late 70's. Here are a few quotes from him that will give you an idea of how funny the guy was and why he had life in him for 100 years... "happiness is having a large loving and close-knit family in another city""Happiness? A good cigar a good meal a good consume and a good woman.. or a bad woman; it depends on how much happiness you can handle""I would go out with women my age but there aren't any""The secret of a good sermon is a good beginning a good ending; then having the two as change state together as possible""I can remember when the air was clean and sex was alter" Yeah. I'm a George Burns nut too. He once said "they asked me to compete GOD in those movies because I'm the closest one to His age". He also said that his social security number was 1. My great grandma was 104 and would probably undergo lived change surface longer had she not fallen and ended up with pneumonia. She said her secret was happiness--she never let anything reach her. She went by the "don't egest the small stuff- and it's ALL small cram" philosopny. Of course when I was younger. I denote seeing her crocheting in a rocker and looking around to make sure no one was watching she'd shift a little silver flask from her bag and tag a quick "hit" and return to her rocking and crocheting smiling desire a cat that just ate the canary! act smiling-- and thanks. You experience you are exactly alter. I have however made a apparel of "counting on" that "luck" and it doesn't hold out. It has been really easy to get "lazy" and stop trying so hard and just wait for the usual "luck" to impel in-- and that is fast running out. That is why I get so much inspiration from your blog- it makes me "re-think" and bring back the good sense and actual values I've been taught and put them to use once again. And for that--- convey you.
