I just recently found your message boards and was excited to read about all the wine cooler tips. I found a Vinotemp 28-bottle TE wine cooler at Target for $179. It seems like most members here have either Haier or Edgestar. Anyone have pros and cons for the Vinotemp? I wanted to try starting without a controller but if I need to have one there's no question about it. I'm excited about starting my new house project. Yes. I consider this something for the house. I live in Georgia so the temperature here is crazy hot. I've been storing my precious boxes of Cubans/Non-Cubans in my locker at the local shop. Needless to say room is running out.
I've had a great time reading about everyone's tips and experiences. I wish I would have started building this thing a while back. So far I've got a Cigar Oasis XL Plus (from before). 2 lbs of beads (equation came out to 1.5) digital hygometer. I'll be picking up a wine cooler this weekend with my wife. I'm leaning towards the Vinotemp but you never know what I might find at another store. Bruin7
that sounds like a good deal on a 28 bottle wine cooler there is one at Newegg com for i think 169 but then you have to pay shipping on top of that. I dont have any experience with them but i am excited for your project! By the way welcome to the jungle! i hope you can find yourself at home here.-matt

I have that exact vinotemp unit (found out about it by doing a search for 'vinotemp' here)I am not running a controller on mine (I'm your neighbor in SC) and am consistently able to maintain temps below 70 degrees by setting the unit's digital temp to around 63. With these settings it will cycle 3-5 times per hour if the ambient temperature is around 82. Havent' been through winter yet but I expect that it will cycle a lot less. The nice thing about the Vinotemp is that it's ThermoElectric. most of the Haier units that folks have written about are compressor units which do a FANTASTIC JOB of making things cold but also remove massive amounts of RH when the compressor kicks on. External controllers such as the Johnson Controller work well with compressor units because they minimize the compressor cycles thus saving precious RH. Many posts that I've read generally lead me to believe that most TE units don't need a controller.... After all you're just trying to avoid temperatures above 72 - 74 degrees over long periods of time not keeping ice cream frozen. The only thing I did to my vinotemp was plug the drain hole and fired it up.. took a few days to get the plastic smell out and the only thing that truly took care of it was some empty boxes from my B&MsI have since added a fan to the lower section of the unit as I found temperature variances of about 3 degrees from the top to the bottom as well as 1-2 points on the humidity. Running with 2 lbs of 65% beads and nothing else for humidification.. store my sticks in the free boxes to avoid the OCCASIONAL 3-6% swings in humidity. My guess is you will be ROCK SOLID with the CO and beads... ONE WORD OF CAUTION: If the Vinotemp loses power it will reset it's temperature setting to the lowest possible (54 degrees).. this caused me to dip down into the mid 50's RH because it is drawing air from the room to cool. I've since trained my wife to reset the temp setting if the power goes out. That is probably the only con that I can think of thus far... P. S that nasty looking 'vinotemp' sticker peels off the glass door with a little bit of elbow grease!

You can always get a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). Depending on how much power the cooler draws they can easily last hours if not days. There are all sorts of UPSes out there all price ranges. If temporary power outages are a frequent issue it might be worth it to get.
Thanks to everyone who posted tedrodgerscpa it sounds like you've got a solid system running. The Vinotemp looks like the winner. BTW what does B&M mean? The local shop?Bruin7
Well I finally picked the Vinotemp up from Target. I just wiped it down and turned it on. Placed 2 lbs of Heartfelt beads in. Credo hygrometer and empty boxes in. How long should I wait to put my cigars in? I can't wait to get this thing running smoothly!
Replied to your PM Give it a few days for RH to regulate and allow the plastic smell to dissapate... BTW. I store my loose sticks in boxes from my B&M. some folks feel good about having them in open trays in their cooleridor.... I'm not that kind of fellow. I guess. I wouldn't hesitate to throw full boxes in it but keep my singles in a spanish cedar casa!
9/13 Update:I checked on my Vinotemp before leaving for work this morning and it showed 64%/68 degrees. I had set it to 60 degrees last night as I've read on CS that the temperature is usually off. Will update with pics when this thing is all done. I'm very excited to have this in the house now. I had been storing all my NC/C cigars in my locker at the B&M.
Are you running with both beads and the CO? if so that's great that you were able to stabilize so quickly (assuming you've got 65% beads that is).... If you start seeing low RH you can probably bump up the temperature a bit.. the lower the temp the more times it cycles and the lower your RH... Great news!

I've got 65% beads in there. They're currently in mesh bags but I might put them in Gladware. Would you recommend that? When I get home I'm going to raise the temp to 62 to see how it goes. Currently I'm not running the Cigar Oasis but might if I can't raise the humidity to at least 66%. My goal is to be at around 65%-67%/65 degrees.
Beads love surface area.. the more surface area the better off they'll work... I have half a pound in an open ceramic pie plate at the bottom of my cooler and a pound and a half distributed everywhere else in panty hose (poor man's mesh bag). Mesh bags prevent runaway beads and the pie plate can't spill at the bottom of the cooler. My fan blows directly into the pie plate which is about half an inch deep with beads sprayed 60% clear. Seems to be holding well
Hi guys!I have a quick update on my Vinotemp. There are 3 levels to my humidor so far. I put my hygrometer at the top level in a box and the humidity is down to 60%. Some of my cigars are dry up there. But the humidity is good in the middle and bottom. Actually at the middle rack the cigar box has 'slight' condensation on the lid. I just turned my Cigar Oasis to 70% and there are 2 lbs of beads in there placed evenly at the top and bottom levels with an Oust fan at the bottom. What should I do to make the humidity more uniform from top to bottom. As of right now I can't put anything near the top and my Padron 40ths just took a hit. My CCs are near the middle and bottom and are doing OK. Please help! Thanks!

Gang,I undergo come to a changed opinion. Before I had stated that ISOMs were good but NC were just as good. Now I'd comfort say I prefer the average NC to an ISOM but there is nothing like properly aged and cared for ISOMs. Overall I'd have to say that NCs are exceed because they are ready to smoke on purchase and most ISOM as I understand it arent. But if you can get your hands on anything ISOM with proper age (read 18 months to whenever) there is NOTHING like it. My knowledge of properly aged sticks comes from 3 folks: 68 Trishield. Navydoc and Clampdown. Eric from Phily gets an assist here because he let me taste some 70's and 80's sticks on a Saturday and on Sunday I piked up a second wine cooler and cigar oasis for my current overflow (buying 10 boxes next week) and for the eventual use of buying and aging ISOMs. Can you please please please please show these brothers some ring gage loving for helping a wayard soul find the true path.

Ron,Figured I'd post this same question in your forum as well. In hopes you could provide me some insight to cure my problem. The temp range in Bahrain is 105-125F with low 60's mid 70's humidity and this is the current problem I'm having. I recently got a new humi from tampahumidor and a cigar oasis as come up. But before this humi I had them in a savoy humi and they appear crunchy when I squeeze them next to my ear. My challenge is how long shall I let them be before then return back to ideal smoking conditions? I currently have the temp in the dwell where the humi is set to 69F and inside the humi is about 70/71. Thanks in advance. V/rBrian

Ron that's the humidity level outside. Inside the accommodate it's about 67-72 and about 32-40% humidity so I'm thinking the C. O II isn't going to help understand the problem so some heartfelt beads may be in order. V/rBrian

as long as the Cigar Oasis is working properly it ordain do a great job of bringing your cigars back to life. I would say about 1 month till they are smokable again just smoke 1 of those cigars a week process you sight an improvement nothing wrong with adding some beads to the humidor.

the cartridge should be good for a few refills the lid of the cartridge can be pryed apart couple drops of silicone to put it back together you can use more florist foam or those plant crystals that breathe out up when you alter them with water(whats in the Drymistat tubes). I dont experience if beads would be the best choice to fill the cartridge ask Viper139 about that.
