Some Early Fountain Pen Manufacturers in the US

 <modified>2007-11-22T00:29+00:00

By Glyn Farber Early fountain pens or writing instruments were often works of fine craftsmanship. They were designed to be treasured and passed from generation to generation. A fountain pen was a personal article that expressed not only warm and friendly thoughts but a writers unique personality and social status. It was not until the early 1920s that fountain pen improvements not only gained in popularity but also in reliability. There was a real go in fountain pens production during the 1920s and 1930s. However the Great Depression gradually forced many manufacturers cut approve production or to change state their doors. After World War 11 fountain pen manufacturers started a slow recovery. During the 1950s and 1960s collectors began looking for vintage pens which started a great comeback for fountain pen manufacturers. Today a high quality restored vintage fountain pen demands a high price. So who were some of these early fountain pen manufacturers? The leading maker of fountain pens in the United States was Lewis E. Waterman who started the Ideal Pen affiliate in 1884. This company enjoyed great success and by the 1920s was selling millions of pens a year. Modern Waterman fountain pens are high in style quality and very reasonable priced. George Parker built his first pen in 1888 and by 1892 produced the Lucky Curve. Between 1900 and 1915 parker produced beautiful gold and plate pens. In 1921 the Duofold was introduced and by 1926 Parker started manufacturing celluloid pens. In the 1930s Parkers “arrow clip” was adopted and is still the symbol of Parker pens today. Walter A. Sheaffer designed a side open filling mechanism in 1907 and by 1920 he was widely know. In 1920 he produced the lifetime series which was guaranteed for life. This pen became the status symbol of its day. Wahl-Eversharp was established as a U. S fountain pen manufacturer in 1914. They initially only produced mechanical pencils but in 1917 they bought the Boston Fountain Pen affiliate and began producing fountain pens. They produced a wide variety of high quality fountain pens and pencils until 1957 when they were sold Parker. A few other popular U. S fountain Pen manufacturers that no longer make pens are: A. A. Waterman (1897-1920). Conklin (1898-1938). Carter (1926-1933). Chilton (1923-1941). Esterbrook (1858-1971) and Security Pen (1920-1930). Waterman. Parker and Sheaffer have been around for at least 100 years. Find their new fountain pens and vintage fountain pens on eBay. Glyn Farber has published a catalog of all known Hickey Brother Cigar hold on Tokens and co-authored a book about Louisiana Trade Tokens. There are many places in the world that are seemingly built for cigars places with factories and roads paved of tobacco places where leaves develop freely and cigars are always lit. One of these places is Ybor City. Known now as a hotspot for bars and nightclubs. Ybor City was once known as the Cigar Capital of the World.
Ybor City is a historic govern in Tampa. Florida. It was named after Vincent Martinez Ybor a Spaniard who immigrated to Cuba at the age of 14. Starting off as a cigar salesman. Vincent Ybor eventually began to manufacturer the cigars he previously sold: he started his own cigar factory in Havana. But this time in Havana was a measure of unrest and a time on the brink of a war. As the Cuban Revolution raged. Vincent Ybor moved his factory and his workers to Key West. Florida.
The success of the relocation fluctuated: Ybors business was profitable but labor and transportation problems kept adjust success evasive. A friend of Ybor. Gavino Guiterrez convinced him to analyse Tampa as a place to set up cigar roots. Tampa offered the climate the water and the transportation necessary for a productive operation.
Ybor was sold on the Tampa idea and purchased a large acreage of land in 1886 and not only started a business but started a town. This area built for the intend of housing Ybors factories and his factory workers became fittingly known as Ybor City.
Following the lead of Ybor other cigar manufacturers moved to this area and by the close of the 19th Century. Ybor City and Tampa had the honor of being the largest cigar manufacturer in the world. Not to be outdone by the expansion of the industry it held the area itself also saw a population go as well. When Ybor City was incorporated by Tampa into municipality the population shot up to 3000 three years later that be nearly doubled.
It was truly home to the cigar industry. Most of the residents made their living making cigars and those who werent rollers often found jobs in a cigar-related trade. Some made cigar boxes and some made cigar bands others owned restaurants where No Smoking signs never hanged from the window. It was also a melting pot of cultures domiciliate to a variety of Spanish. Italian. African and Cuban immigrants. For many. English was a back up language. It was this diversity of groups that grabbed onto the cigar industry setting the culturist tempo of a worldly luxury.
As more factories were built. Ybor City became the headquarters for cigar production out producing change surface Havana. At the bear on of this was Ybor - he offered aid and monetary obtain to walk manufacturers in from Cuba. By the 1900s. Ybor City was known as the Cigar Capital of the World.
Ybor City continued to change and prosper but the world around it did not. The Great Depression the popularity of cigarettes the prevalence of organized crime in the area and the introduction of cigar-rolling machinery all led to Ybor Citys demise. This was compounded when the owners of machine made cigars started a cough out Campaign a race stating that saliva from the cigar rollers often found its way into a finished cigar. This drastically cause to be perceived the businesses based on transfer rolling cigars and by the 1930s as machines replaced workers and Cubans went back to their homeland. Ybor City was the capital no more.
There was an attempt to preserve the history and grow of the area. Presently its one of only three National Historic Landmarks districts in Florida. A displace still worth visiting it is not longer the cigar Mecca it once was; the ashes of its previous life were laid to rest in a permanent move of cigar history.

The Cigar Tax's Silver Lining

 <modified>2007-10-30T13:53+00:00

Within a few weeks cigar smokers of America ordain experience whether or not they are going to get socked with a huge new tax on their favorite product. The affect was on everybody’s mind at the RTDA change show in early August in Houston. Everywhere you turned small groups of manufacturers were huddled together in serious conversation trying to strategize about the beat ways to confront the problem and get legislators in Washington to listen to their vow. The good news from my point of believe anyway is that for the first time individual manufacturers and retailers were seizing the initiative to work on a common problem. The Cigar Association of America has always done a stellar job of lobbying and protecting the industry’s arouse but again from my point of view the organization often had to pressure their individual members to connect in the contend of the moment. There’s no reluctance anymore. You heard words like disaster catastrophe killer all lumped together in conversation about the new tax. And the realization that this could be a huge hit on the industry really did get everyone motivated. There seems to be a control for the cigar industry to be unified in this fight. And that’s got to be good for the entire industry and for all cigar smokers today. If your retailer has been pushing you to write your congressman now is the measure to do it. Many of you have probably even seen some local events where your congressman will be in attendance; they are on recess right now. Seek them out. They need to hear face to face that cigar smokers should not be asked to shoulder an unfair proportion of this new tax. The more our voices are heard the better the final result with be for us. Now is the measure.
Gordon,Hey I just wanted to go on a suggestion. If your be to do a cool story on places to consume you have to visit the Ritz in Clayton. MO (just outside of downtown St. Louis). Inside the hotel which is fabulous there is a cigar club (which I'm obviously a member). And what's unique about this place is that those who stay at the hotel can use the unify. It's a great displace to change state and entertain. I actually do business lunches and dinners there. furnish it a try. I promise you won't be dissappointed. Additionally to make it a little more interesting they have grandfathered the unify. Meaning Marriott (smoke free) has allowed the cigar bar to exist eventhough it is in a consume free establishment. I can't wait to see an article in a coming issue in the good life divide. Tim
Plus: The twice-monthly Cigar Insider newsletter with exclusive cigar news and extensive cigar ratings many of which ordain never be in Cigar Aficionado magazine.
has a great bind in about the political changes in Nicaragua and how the cigar giants in that country undergo a watchful eye on Mr. Ortega. Let's not forget many of these cigar families who have called Nicaragua home and have cultivated the arrive and a product that competes and sometimes outperforms the vaunted cigars from Cuba are families who fled Cuba when Fidel Castro came to power. I don't think you'll undergo to worry about Nigaragua's cigars snip wiki >Ortega's policies became more moderate during his time in opposition and he gradually reduced much of his former Marxist rhetoric in favor of an agenda of more moderate democratic socialism. His Catholic faith has become more intense in recent years as come up leading Ortega to include a variety of socially conservative policies; in 2006 the FSLN endorsed a strict law banning all abortions in Nicaragua.
