Would it mess anything up if i cut the cord off for the outside temp monitoring? Probably not but why take the chance? Why not just roll up the cord & put a piece of tape or a zip tie around it? Probably not but why take the chance? Why not just roll up the cord & put a piece of tape or a zip tie around it? Obviously i have it rolled up and rubber banded currently it would just lay in there so much better if i could just cut it off. It seems a little stupid but just bothers me. I wondered if any else had done it all ready before I f it up. man I know exaclty what you mean when you say "It just wont sit in there right" I'm not to sure if it would mess anything up but my guess would be no unless the wire is used for other things besides temp then you should be fine. And if you do some how end up messing it up you could always return it to Radioshack and say it came like that lol. I doubt it'll do anything. You're just altering the cord from 2 feet (guessing here) to 1 cm. It's still doing the same basic function just shorter. You're not altering the workings of the hygrometer so it'll be fine. If it messes up go to Wal-Mart and buy one of theirs for $6 Copyright © TOP 25 CIGAR & CLUB STOGIE. COM All rights reserved Winnipeg. Manitoba. Canada

"Not holding humidity" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-08-04 13:14:37

I need help. I purchased a Humidor (milano) from Tampa Humidor in August. I used the hygrometer and the small round humidification element that came with it for a while. I couldn't get the humidity to stabilize so I bought the 4 oz. 65% tube of beads from Heartfelt and put that in there. The 4 oz is way more than I really need for the size of the humidor but I would rather have too much than not enough. Any way I had wiped it down with distilled water and also bought a digital hygrometer about the same time the beads arrived. The humidity will hold at a 64% reading on the digital hygrometer for about 2 to 3 weeks and then fall down into the mid to high 50s over the course of a couple of days. I make sure the beads are charged with distilled water so I'm not letting them dry out. The humidor is about 80 to 90% full of smokes. I have flavor tested the digital hygrometer and it is reading 1% low. I called and talked to someone at Tampa Humidor and told them every thign you see here and he told me that I needed some extra help possibly more beads. Now I have the 4 oz tube which for the dimension of my humidor is way enough. I am in Northeast Florida but it still doesn't seem like I need any more humidification with the beads. Any help would be appreciated Sounds like the seal is faulty. If you close the lid on a dollar account can you easily pull it out?Does it make a "whoosh" sound when you drop the lid change state or a "thunk"?As long as it is not a glass top place a flashlight inside and close the lid. Can you see light coming from the seams of the lid? I agree with Todd that it sounds as though the seal is faulty. The dollar bill test is one that always works.. try it all the way around the advance not just in one place. It should be difficult to pull out or not pull out at all. Let us know what happens. Hmmm when you bought it all you did was wipe it down which most would advise against and place the humidification device in it.. and then later beads?Usually you want to place a container of distilled water inside and leave it for several days.. if not a week or more until the hygrometer reads around 70-75%. Maybe the cedar inside is still actively absorbing the humidity from the air. I did the shot glass seasoning when I got it for probably a week or so. And it said it was 70%. I don't evaluate the original hygrometer was very accurate though. Maybe I will try to re season it. I would just use the beads as a good measure of humidity loss. If they are going opaque relatively fast you have a problem. You might also want to go down to the hardware store and buy the 1/8" weatherstripping and just lay down a lie across the perimeter of the lid (like a refrigerator door) and see if that helps. __________________First when I meet you. I will hit you in the nose for turning me into a Pepin whore and corrupting me. Then I will pick you up give you a hug buy you a beer and share a smoke.-Steve Ggainey your post has me concerned. I also have a Milano humidor from Tampa that was purchased in 5/06. I had changed out the wood frame on the lid and put a large rectangular green foam humidifier like the one in the Tuscany when I purchased it. My cigars are in good condition but I have been trying to maintain 70% RH with Tampa’s PG solution and distilled wet. I undergo had some inconsistency in the RH from time to time. I got tired of trying to figure out when to add more PG solution or just distilled water and how much. After reading a lot of positive postings about the Heartfelt 65% beads I decided to give them a try and ordered the 65% beads from Heartfelt hoping to make things easier. Also it seems like a good majority tend to lean towards 65% RH for better smoking. Two ounces of beads is overkill for that size humidor according to the calculator on the heartfelt place and the trouble you’re having with four ounces is like I said a big concern. It sounds like you seasoned the humidor adequately and the seal fine. With that many beads you should not undergo to add water as often according to Heartfelt and the SUDDEN drop in RH over only a couple of days is disturbing. Unfortunately. I don’t have an answer for you but I hope I made the alter decision in ordering these beads to replace the foam in my rectangular humidifier. After ordering the beads I found a posting on the Club Stogie forum tiled “Ditched my Beads”. The posting mentioned things like wrappers loosing their sheen looking dry and a change in taste while some of the same cigars (Padron Aniv) were moved to another humidor with the foam type humidifier and those kept their sheen and tasted fine. I was looking for a more consistent RH with less maintenance but now not sure if that will be the case and above all I don’t want to ruin my cigars. Has anyone had and similar problems with the beads?I have a wide selection of cigars from Padron 1964 Aniv. Maduros. Rocky Patel. HDM. CAO and more all having a nice sheen and some showing slight plume. Has anyone used the 65% beads for a year or more and have their cigars look this good or will mine end up dry and loosing their nice appearance? There is a thread in top of the storage forum that can answer many questions regarding the beads. There are guys here who store hundreds if not thousands of cigars using the beads. I have them in several desktop humidors and all the guys at the office are using them with nothing but good things to say. My cigars haver never smoked as good as they do now. I Use 65% and about twice as much as I am supoposed to need. I probably store about 50 smokes in the beads and about 100 in a fridgea dor using a cigar Oasis XL. I don't notice any difference in the way they smoke. If I didn't already have the Cigar Oasis i would be using beads for it as well. Ggainey your post has me concerned. I have been using the 65% beads in a humi with over 40 boxes of extreme quality cigars for more than a year. My cigars are very fine. No problems no issues. Not sure where you are getting your information but I for one am very happy. The green foam is basically what florists put flowers in. It holds and releases water moisture. The beads hold and absorb maintaining a standard. Add water to the green foam and the humidity goes up and you have to balance. If the beads get a little dry a light spray and your good to go. I have changed all my humis large and small to beads because it is so much easier to maintain a balance. Cigars hate change. Rapid change of humidity moisture heat etc alter how they draw smoke taste. The better balanced your humi is the better your cigars age and mature. My 2 cents.

"Humidipak One-Step Calibration kit" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 19:46:25

I recently purchased 3 digital hygrometers from Heartfelt. With one of them I bought the add-on Calibration Kit. I have had 4 hygrometers in the sealed bag with the Humidipak packet that is supposed to bring the RH in the bag to 75.5% for 48 hours. I think mine is defective because all 4 hygrometers that are in the pouch are reading 70% after 48 hours of being in there… I'm having a similar issue also with heartfelt. I put my analog and digital hygrometers in the bag and it's been 24 hours with them reading 79% exactly. The weird thing is I did a salt test a while ago while waiting for my kit to arrive and my digital read 71% after a full day. I'm going to leave them in there for another day and see what happens. Luckily I have my beads in my humidor so I'm not too worried. I put 4 ounces in when my measurements said I only needed one. With the Cal Kit I go for at least 36 hours before I really care what it says. As far as more than one hygrometer in the kit at a time it is OK to put in as many as will fit. Bear it is very possible for the hygros that you have tested are off by 5%. Just add 5% to the reading you get when the hygro is in your humidor and you will experience what the rh in there is. When you compare the results to the results you got with the salt test I would definately have more trust in the Cal Kit. The mixing of the salt is so critical to the final results. With digital hygros as well as analog them being off by 6. 7. 8% is not unusual. The good thing is that digitals will at least repeat the inaccuarcy where most analogs will drift changing how far off they are. Go for the 36 hours and see what you get. I also had trouble until I hit the define button after adjusting the dial and then it was right. If your isn't adjustable do by me. It's been well over 36 hours now and my hygros are both reading jumping from 78 to 79% the temperature has been around 65 constantly. I think the analog might actually be a tad closer to 75 though alter now it looks to be at 76-77. Strange that it's more accurate than the digital at this point. Question. Why does it take so long? Does it act 36+ hours for the humidty to be created in that small environment? or does it take that long just for the hygrometer to read it? I have always wondered if these worked or not. Have any of you done a review or tested these yet? i used the calibration kit that came with my adjustable hygro after 30+ hours it read 66% so i made the adjustments and put it back.

"Hygrometer Testing" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 15:53:32

I read some where one of the cigar shops how to test a Hygrometer. For the life of me can not find it. Any Ideas - Don - "Our Grand Business is Not to See what Lies Dimly at a Distance. But to do what Lies Clearly at Hand" How to Test and Calibrate a Hygrometer 1. alter a milk bottle cap or other small container with salt and add a few drops of water (not enough to dissolve the salt). 2. Put the cap inside of a baggie or plastic container along with your hygrometer and close the bag. 3. Wait 6 hours then check the reading on your hygrometer without opening the bag (or immediately after removing). If the reading is 75% then your hygrometer is accurate and no adjustment is required. 4. If the reading is not precisely 75% then alter the hygrometer to 75% by turning the screw or control on the approve. This must be done immediately after removing from the bag or container before room conditions cause the reading to change. If there is no screw (or control) to recalibrate your hygrometer then you ordain just undergo to remember to add or calculate the difference between the test reading and 75% in request to cause the actual humidity level inside of your humidor. For example if your hygrometer evaluate reading was 80% then calculate 5% from the readings you get inside of your humidor to determine the actual levels of humidity (e g a reading of 70% inside your humidor equals an actual humidity aim of 65%).
