"Students busted for alcohol violations by Narragansett Police" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 11:24:05

09/07/07 - Back to school move-in this weekend brought court dates for 14 University of Rhode Island students. Narragansett Police on patrol in Eastward Look charged 13 students Monday night and one student Tuesday night for a host of alcohol-related offenses. The charges stemmed from underage consumption and possession of alcohol."That's pretty high in comparison to last year," Narragansett Community Police Officer Scott Vellone said. "We didn't have any arrests last year but we had two or three times more party complaints."Vellone speculated that extra officers on foot and bicycle patrol helped curb excessive partying by URI students moving into rental homes for the school year. None of the students were taken into custody but given summons to appear in Fourth Division District Court. Many of the students face fines ranging from $150 to $750. In addition the Narragansett Police forwarded copies of the arrest reports to the university administration which under policies passed in October 2005 can hold students culpable for their actions off campus. Possible university sanctions could include fines community service or expulsion. In addition the police also handed out three so-called "orange stickers" on Monday night to homes hosting loud parties. The homes are required to post the brightly-colored stickers branding them as a party house on their door for 60-days. However had the homes held the party one day later an ordinance passed Tuesday night by the Narragansett Town Council would have required the stickers to remain posted until the end of the academic year."They actually got lucky to a degree," Vellone said. He identified the houses as 24 Sweet Birch Trail. 7 Palm Beach Ave and 50 Narragansett Ave. Police reported the following students charged in the late Monday hours or early Tuesday morning:Bryan Barbieri. 20 of 22 Sakonnet Blvd.. Narragansett; Jeffrey F. Corvese. 20 of 54 Exeter Blvd.. Narragansett; Anthony J. DeRobertis. 20 of 39 Birch Street. Narragansett; Evan Frankel. 20 of 50 Lower College Road. South Kingstown; Michele Lauer. 20 of 18 Hope Lane. Narragansett; James F. Maxfield. 20 of 64 Yellowstone Ave.. Warwick; Agatha O. Mysliwiec. 20 of 28 Ashton Lane. Narragansett; Jaclyn Pascocello. 20 of 22 Sakonnet Blvd.. Narragansett; Brandon M. Royal. 20 of 23 Glocester Road.. Narragansett; Adrienn E. Ruhe-Lischke. 18 of Ontario. Canada; Ryan Thompson. 19 of 105 Sakonnet Blvd.. Narragansett; Kelly Vigneron. 20 of Glocester. Road.. Narragansett; and Adam C. Yellen. 20 of 54 Exeter Blvd.. Narragansett. In addition Steven Alviti. 18 of 212 Woodridge Drive. North Kingstown was charged Tuesday evening with attempting to purchase alcohol at Bonnet Shores Liquor using a fake ID.

"Lippitt Hall slated for remodeling" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-25 01:26:43

09/07/07 - After more than 100 years of gracing the University of Rhode Island with its presence on the Quadrangle. Lippitt Hall will receive a full renovation leaving its occupants in temporary homes. The renovation will cost $8.5 million according to the university Web site. Funded by the university and a state attach referendum the cost includes new windows technological upgrades a new roof and air conditioning. The parking lot behind Bliss Hall will be closed during the day for construction purposes along with Powerhouse Road. Paul DePace director of Capital Projects at the university said the only delay in construction which was originally scheduled to be completed fall of 2008 is purchasing difficulties."This will not affect the quality of the project when it's done," he said. "We will certainly undergo it done by January of next year. We need to get the contractor on board officially and then we ordain begin."The Honors Program which has called Lippitt its home for the past 14 years is now adapting to a new cover the former Roger Williams Dining Hall. Professor Richard McIntyre director of the Honors Program said the move left the program slightly unorganized but is optimistic about the renovation in Lippitt."Where we're going to be sounds great," he said. "I think it's going to be a perfect home and a showcase for the Honors Program on the campus."The additions to the top floor of Lippitt will include technological advances similar to that of Independence Hall such as projectors screens and appear systems controlled from a lectern. DePace said the ceiling of this floor will be opened up to create an aesthetically pleasing atmosphere for guest lecturers."A challenge in a building like this is to take a 100-year-old building and keep the historical character of the building but put in what's necessary for modern teaching and learning," he said. McIntyre said. "The good thing about where we are now is that we are near the dorms so there's a lot of student energy which is nice."Along with the Honors Program computer systems that were stationed in Lippitt will be moved Sept. 15 to Tyler Hall to consolidate the university's computer system. DePace said. "The university's master plan says that we want the buildings around the Quadrangle to not be administrative space but to be academic space so this is fulfilling that role."The basement of the hall which DePace said was formerly used as "dead storage," will soon hold several offices for the math department. "There are very few offices [in Lippitt] now," DePace said. "This space wasn't very well-used but we wanted to be within the existing walls. These are all offices built to university standards."Other renovations include the first handicapped accessible entrance and an additional staircase move to the building to keep up with current fire codes.
