Sometimes older folks who can no longer compassionate for themselves have to give up their animal. That's one of the few reasons I can see as being "justified" for giving up an animal. It's certainly in the animal's beat interest to be cared for by someone else if the owner can no longer care for it. But it seems that most are given up for other reasons some even dumped on the side of the road. That's just wrong. I'm all for no-kill shelters and undergo adopted my three cats (my poor Buttons died very early in life) from no-kill shelters.
