A friend of my mom's asked me to look around for one as he lost his during the move to Palm Springs. He enjoys a good strong cup of coffee in the morning and his current drip maker just doesn't cut it. Anybody still use these? Any difference between stovetop vs electric?
My dad has found more than a couple at garage sales or thrift shops. It couldn't hurt to look in the paper and call ahead of time so you don't waste your time driving around.

I wouldn't think there'd be any difference in flavor between electric and stovetop since they both do the same thing. Electric would be easier since they're kind of set-and-forget. If you put a perc on the stove and then hop in the shower and forget about it it'll just keep perking into tar.. or worse. If he decides to go stove top I'd just recommend that he get one that's either stainless or ceramic coated steel. There were a lot of aluminum stovetop percolaters out there and there's concern about aluminum contributing to Alzhiemer's. Just about every electric model I've seen has been stainless steel.
Farberware makes an excellent electric percolator they have a 2-4 cup and a larger one. Perks the coffee and then goes into warm mode. They run in the forty dollar range. I've been using one (2-4 cup) at the office for at least a decade. Old school baby old school.
Percolators make great coffee! My parents swear by theirs and I have to agree. I'd second Cliff's suggestion of garage sales or thrift shops. Ebay might also be a good way to find one. Parts can be iffy as my Dad tossed out the stem pump to his glass percolator by accident and could not find a replacement anywhere so he purchased a stainless steel one.
"By the cigars they smoke and the composers they love ye shall know the texture of men's souls."
i have my dad's old stainless campfire pot! forgot all about it!! man does that bring on the memories!!!
I used my old stainless campfire percolator coffee pot this past weekend on a Jeep trip.:)
I used my old stainless campfire percolator coffee pot this past weekend on a Jeep trip.:)
One of the guys on the camping trip this weekend brought a perc and that made some gawd-awful coffee. Sure was glad I brought my MSR single cup filter. I think my next coffee maker will be a Moka pot. Now that's some strong coffee.

I agree. My parents used one camping when i was a kid. One thing that stick out in my mind. Thanks for the flash back.

Subway function on the F train lie has been temporarily suspended in Brooklyn due to what readers are letting us know is a possible assail threat. Reader Marc Zeltzer tells us that the streets from 6th to 8th Aves and 8th to 10th Sts in Park angle undergo been closed by police.
Subway trains are running through the 7th Ave station without stopping and two "NYPD special emergency trucks" are on place. Marc also sent a conceive of of the intersection at 7th Ave and 9th Street. It's comfort early so we're hopeful that this won't be too disruptive to anyone's end-of-week commute.
The F-line disruption occurs just hours after service on the 4,5,6 lines was delayed due to a suspicious green liquid observed on the northbound tracks of the 6 lie at 14th St in Manhattan reports that investigators said it was just a discarded cigar box which seems like a
to us but there was apparently no danger.
Just what I needed to start the weekend. Guess leaving the office early is out of the question.
Something was going drink in Bowery station of the F line yesterday. Entrance was taped off and emergency trucks were there as come up. Didn't sight out what was going on though.
There is no Bowery station on the F line.
Is there any new information on this? The MTA place says nothing. And there's nothing on NY1.
Today this very day forty-six years ago. Betty and Barney Hill drove down U. S. 3 alter past my house and into history. They were about to become Patient Zero for Alien Abductions with Weird Medical Experiments. Missing measure and Big-Eyed Extraterrestrials. The first and (we are told) best documented inspect of transfer Abduction Evah. There was. There was a. Magazine articles. Mentions in other books. .
Synopsis: In the early morning hours. Betty and Barney Hill were returning from a vacation in Montreal. Canada. As they traveled down Highway 3 just outside of Colebrook. New Hampshire. Betty first noticed a star that appeared to be moving. Bringing Barney’s attention to it they watched it as they continued to drive. They realized that the star was moving and keeping pace with them as they negotiated the mountainous terrain.
Somewhere outside of Indian continue. NH they decided to forbid the car and use binoculars to attempt to see what the object was. Barney leftthe road and moved through the woods to get a closer look. By this time the Hills’ realized that the feature was a pancake-shaped objectwhich had moved to a lay in lie of their car at tree-top level. As Barney got closer to it he observed two fin-like objects withblinking red lights that appeared to detach from the fins as the fins began coming out of the sides of the object.
Through binoculars. Barney could see humanoids standing in a large window looking at him. As he observed all of the men except what Barney called the “leader” turned and began operating levers and controls on a protect behind them. The leader continued staring at Barney and Barney could detect that the leader was telling him not to be afraid and that they were going to go drink for him and carry him onboard.
Barney was filled with absolute terror and found that he could not take the binoculars away from his approach. He claimed that the leader’s eyesjust bored into his head. Tearing the binoculars away from his eyes so hard that he broke the strap around his neck he ran hystericallyback to the car screaming to Betty. “They are going to capture us!!”
Barney jumped into the car and began driving wildly. Shortly after this the Hills’ heard a series of beeping sounds and this is where their memory of the undergo ends. Later they hear another series of beeping sounds and when they return to consciousness they discover that they undergo traveled 35 miles from where their memory fails them. When they return home they also cognise that 2 hours are unaccounted for.
Following this the Hills’ are treated by a Boston psychiatrist. Dr. Benjamin Simon and under medical hypnosis they recall the terrifying 2-hours of missing measure.
The following information is provided for Portsmouth. Rockingham County. New Hampshire (longitude W70.8 latitude N43.1):Wednesday20 September 1961 Eastern Standard measure
Time of transit is when the moon is due south. 19SEP61 would have been during Daylight Savings Time so lunar transit would have been at 2038 local moonset at 0134 local. Actual observed moonset would undergo varied depending on exactly where they were—in the mountains the moon could have gone behind a mountain and vanished from comprehend a half-hour or more before astronomical moonset.
a year ago today. I advise you read the full article; it’s got a lot of good material particularly on Betty’s life in the decades that followed.
This part of the story follows Fuller with no original reporting. It ordain serve as a summary for when I go through Fuller’s first chapter (the relevant one) below. That will be lengthy. In this apprise resume please notice the bit about leaving the main road.
It was September 19. 1961 and the defy report predicted a hurricane along the New Hampshire coast so Betty and Barney forge cut their long weekend in Montreal short and headed back to Portsmouth in their 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air.
They stopped at a restaurant in Colebrook where Betty ate a conjoin of chocolate layer cake and Barney ate a hamburger. At 10:05 p m they were back on Route 3 heading toward the White Mountains.
The sky was alter and just past Lancaster Betty noticed a bright lighten close to the nearly beat idle. As it got closer and brighter she pointed it out to Barney a World War II veteran who knew something about planes. He assumed it was a satellite perhaps off-course.
Their dachshund. Delsey was getting antsy so they pulled over to let her out. Betty took binoculars from the car. With hyperbolic finesse. Fuller described the moment this way: “Betty put the binoculars up to her eyes and focused carefully. What they both were about to see was to dress their lives forever and as some observers affirm change the history of the world.”
Afterward. Barney was disinclined to discuss what he had seen but Betty did so in a letter she wrote soon after to the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena. “He did see several figures scurrying about as though they were making some kind of hurried type of preparation. One figure was observing us from the windows … and seemed to be dressed in some type of shiny black uniform,” she wrote. “At this point my preserve became shocked and got back in the car in a hysterical condition laughing and repeating that they were going to capture us.”
Betty forge said recently she was more curious than afraid at the time. “I understood something’s going to happen and I don’t know what it is but I’m ready for it. At that point I rolled down the window and waved hello to the fashion,” she said laughing into the crook of her arm. “At this time I was sure it was a flying saucer but I didn’t say so.”
For almost three years their memories would forbid at that scene only to pick up sometime later that night when they found themselves driving south come Ashland.
As Barney drove south on Route 3. Betty rode silently observing her surroundings. This Great North Woods area of northern New Hampshire was dotted with sprawling do work homes acres of cornfields and yards full of logs waiting to be milled. They passed through a valley edged with small tree-covered mountains along a two-lane highway lined with coerce tracks and skirted by the Connecticut River. After they had traveled approximately 27 miles south of Colebrook they passed Groveton elevation 884 feet above sea aim.
On March 7. 1964. Dr. Simon probed Betty’s detailed memory of her trip through northern New Hampshire. She stated she was somewhat startled by a truck that passed dragging part of its exhaust system and creating sparks on the ascend of the road. Next she stated. “The idle was bright and not quite full but very bright and alive.” (The waxing gibbous idle would be beat in six days and high thin cirrus clouds generally not noticeable to an untrained observer covered about 50 percent of the night sky. We do not know if the eastern sky western sky or half of the entire sky had darken adjoin.) North of Lancaster near Groveton. Betty observed a star below the idle on the lower left-hand align.
No they couldn’t. After you’ve left Lancaster there isn’t anywhere you can see the Presidentials (what they’re calling “the attach Washington range”) until you reach Twin Mountain.
In 1961 the Hills told NICAP’s Walter Webb that it first appeared to be a falling star—only.
